I wanted to make a contribution to this thread since I love Sci-fi (especially hard Sci-fi). But after reading through the thread I realize that most of what I wanted to say was already said by
ATDrake. So karma to him for not only recommending a few of my favorite authors but also opening up with referencing Sturgeon's law!
