We have a fairly new dishwasher with a SS interior, and I've found that dropped objects tend to dent it quite easily, unlike our old DW with a plastic interior.
I've never seen a dented Sony, but I've seen plenty of cracked and chipped Kindles. Clipping the reading light to the Kindle can and has cracked it, which is why I always make sure to have it in its case when using a reading light. I can use the reading light clipped directly to the Sonys without incident. It feels solid, sturdy and like it's not going to do any damage. The worst thing it could do is scratch them metal part, and that hasn't happened either. Even if one had a crack and the other had a dent, a dented case will still protect it's contents, not so much for a cracked case.
