I seem to recall the promo for The Windup Girl didn't have an auto-responder and the reply took about a day or so.
Still no rush, I like some of Night Shades stuff, they've got a couple of free samplers of their anthology books in the Baen free library (OK, technically the webscription free library as its not Baen, but you get the idea) and a couple of other on the nightshade site.
