The issue nynaevelan had with Catalogs going into collections has been resolved. It turns out there was a Metadata Plugboard setup to rewrite the tags. So even though the Personal Doc tag was setup for the Catalog correctly, the plugboard would rewrite the tag and remove it! With the plugboard removed, everything is working.
@beckywc - I'd be interested to see if you're able to try this and to determine if any periodical functionality is lost when changing the file type. The periodicals I've tested with seem to work fine - though I have updated the first post to tell people to make a backup of the original just in case. There must be a reason Kindle uses special file types and doesn't allow periodicals in collections normally....
