After looking at this there seems to be a couple of workarounds, but I've also asked about updating Calibre to make this easier.
- First - delete all copies of your Catalogue from your library and device
- Use the plugin to View collections to see if the warning messages are gone
- Go to Convert books ->Create a Catalogue
- Uncheck 'Send Catalogue to devices automatically'
- Click Download Scheduled, then OK, and wait for the catalogue file to generate
- Use the plugin to View collections again to make sure there are still no warning messages
- Check the tags assigned to the Catalogue book
- Check the tag name used in Preferences->Output Options->Mobi output->Personal doc tag
- Manually add a new tag to the Catalogue book - use the same tag name as the Personal doc tag
- Click Send to Device for the catalogue file
- Use the plugin to Previews collections again to check for warning messages and to see the catalogue in a collection
Alternatively, change your Personal doc tag to "Catalogue" (or "Catalog") to match the default tag used by Catalogues, and add "Catalogue" (or "Catalog") to your Fetch News -> news item -> Extra Tags settings.

@meme: I'm still seeing a few bits of UTF-8 stuff, in the titles in the Edit collection panel, and in titles & collection names in individual book reports in the console when running calibre-debug.

This one might take a while as I'll have to look into unicode and locales...
