Yeah, this one puts me off, too! And it is extremly bright and white. Actually this is the only thing I've seen that Kindle does better than Sony.

I have the Sony case with the light and the light goes out when you put it back in its spot and close the case. It goes out immediately and doesn't require the reader to go to sleep. The only way the light stays on is when the light is removed from its spot in the case so I'm not sure what you're getting at.
