As I said in the second post, there is an update for the 500 to give epub access but it is a return to Sony hardware and firmware upgrade... even if you found the new firmware, it wouldn't do any good as the 500 will still need its hardware upgraded... and it was a free upgrade...

Sony may want to get the reader back and charge you for doing the update. If you don't want to put up with that, you may want to see if the hacked firmware available for your reader here on Mobileread includes any links to copies of the original Sony version 2.0.00.09180. The folks who are using hacked firmware nearly always copy the original firmware when hacking the readers firmware so that the reader can be restored in case of trouble.
