I totally agree with you, I find it completely SILLY to use a reading light on an ebook reader device. When I found out that those don't have a backlight but need a reading light to read in the dark, I decided never ever to get those devices. Thats what I like so much about iPhone (or probably next step iPad!). Really can't get myself to buy a black/white ereader device that I cannot use in dark spots. Also, I just love colored covers, photos or other images.

A book light works great on e-ink. It's really not that bad.

I prefer it to my Nook color in the dark. Much easier on the eyes. I use the NC only when my kids have run off with my booklight somehow and I don't have a lamp nearby.
Since you don't want to do e-ink...Try reading with eyeglasses on instead. Try a bigger LCD screen and thus a bigger font. I can't imagine reading on a device as small as a smartphone. I'd be flipping the page every 5 seconds, and the eyestrain from the little screen would drive me crazy.
