"10 reset thing" => if you reset 505/300 10 times in a row they will fall into firmware upgrade state, no matter what. (but probably updater will be able to recover even without it, as reader is up and running)
The Starting up... message has gone and I now have "Firmware update did not complete successfully. Please try again."

What steps do I need to take before trying the flasher?
