Charlotte's no-nonsense friend was Mary Taylor. Mary lived here in New Zealand for about 15 years, looking after her brother and then running a shop. She was a fiercely independent woman with strong views strongly expressed, and some of her writings were later published.
Mary's brother had a street in Wellington named after him. After he was sentenced to jail (another story...), there was talk of changing the name, but in the end it was kept (and the street is still called Waring Taylor Street after him.
