Really? I heard the exact opposite. Hilo really didnʻt get much at all. Kona got hit fairly hard (or so CNN keeps reporting, I loved the one about the extensive damage on "kona island"). There is quite a bit of damage, with many businesses gutted with water, and their belongings strewn all over the road. The road was closed for a while as they tried to clean up debris and such as well.

This is the reason I like to live in the middle somewhere-- out of the evacuation zone and not too close to any volcano, lest a new one erupt...

Iʻm concerned for stitchawl though-- has he contacted anyone yet? I have a friend in Japan who suffered some serious injury, but was luckily out of the tsunamiʻs path. The footage is breathtaking and horrible.
