In the middle of the 19th century, the friend of a well-known English novelist was settled in New Zealand. Two quotes plucked from letters sent to the more famous friend might make one doubt just how strong the friendship was:
"It seemed to me incredible that you had actually written a book."
"You are a coward and a traitor."
But in context they're a good deal more amicable.
Who was the author? And if you want to show true erudition, who was the friend (who was later also published, though not remotely as well-known)?
