Lydia Maria Gurney : Things Mother Used To Make
‘A collection of old time recipes, some nearly one hundred years old and never published before.’ New York, 1914. (Found on PG.)
A cookery book, featuring traditional American recipes. The chapters are arranged in largely alphabetical order, and so are the recipes within each chapter. Some household hints and advice on frugality is also included.
NB The pint in this book is an American pint of 16 fluid ounces, not the British imperial pint of 20 fluid ounces. Similarly, an American quart is 32 fluid ounces.
I have tried some of the cakes and desserts with success, but cannot endorse the author’s recommendation that cabbage is to be boiled for one and a half hours.
