It has been a long time since I originally registered, but, like HarryT, I think I did this via a web browser rather than within the reader. There should be no difference at the web site end, providing it identifies the right account.
As wallcraft says, the site you download from keeps a list of your authorized PIDs. Other sites have something similar but not identical to Mobipocket.com.

If/when you get a new device, you will need to add it and download your books again. You need to also delete old unused devices.
