And they fit into my pants' pockets very easily. 7" is a step up, but for books it doesn't make much of a difference. And for newspapers, magazines, etc. a 9-10" device is much much better. So a 7" doesn't offer real portability and it doesn't offer full functionality.

For me a phone screen is too small to do much (I use the original Droid) and a 10" screen is too big to be easily portable. Believe me there is a big difference in screen. My Tab screen is 3 times larger than my Droid screen. The Tab is about the same size as a Kindle but the screen is larger. It's very portable, can't slip it in a pocket but I carry a purse and it easily slips in that.
I don't really read magazines or newspapers anymore since I use Calibre to download the news feeds. Those work well on the Tab plus web surfing works well, too.
I was more disappointed in the large size of the iPad than the lack of features. Too big for me. If I want a 10 inch screen I'd rather pull out a netbook. The Touch is too small but the iPad too big. The Tab is just right. If I could make phone calls with the Tab I'd drop my Droid.
Just my opinion.
