Speaking for myself, I think one of the big reasons for rooting is that B&N's default reading app on the Nook Color just isn't very good. It doesn't support either landscape mode or volume button page turns.
Perhaps the most telling point for me is that I've never read an entire book on the device using the stock app. I've read books using both the Kindle app and Aldiko, but not with the stock B&N app.
