I thought that was what was meant by "airplane mode", but you say to make sure airplane mode is disabled and make sure yo u are connected either by wifi or 3G. So, obviously, I'm a little confused.

Airplane mode ON is the same as WiFi OFF. Why they labeled it that way, I have no idea, but that's all it is.
