I totally agree with the notion that people really, really like free stuff (I'm half tempted to post "free dog poop in my yard" on Craigslist > Free Stuff to see if
anyone comes and picks it up :-).
And I totally understand that actual sales are a much better measure.
That said, I'm just wondering if anyone knows how all of these download counts are real people (even if they just read the first paragraph), and if Smashwords has anything in place to guard against bots. And if there are bots, any way to know a percentage.
In the grand scheme, I suppose this curiosity doesn't amount to much. And I suppose the stats on free downloads, even if some are fake, might have placebo affect on the ego, if nothing else!
