Indeed, I have read my fair share of published original crap, and have also delved into some fan-fic which again has produced some crap.

Looking at threads such as the space opera thread, surely as has already been stated the Star Trek, Star Wars, CSI etc novels are all fan-fic, expanding established characters or storylines created by someone else.
