Ballad of Johnny Madigan was in some ways a bit of a disappointment in that I wanted a read about the Civil War from a participants point of view, and the first half of the book satisfied that. Although the second half was still about Johnny, the shift of action away from the battlefield was a might disappointing. However the story was a good read overall.
