Not at all necessary, IMO. I read Crytonomicon first and his whole semi-reincarnated ancestry rubbed me the wrong way so I delayed reading the Cycle for a long time. My loss. The Cycle was amazingly entertaining. Now one of my all-time favorite fictional characters is half-cocked Jack.
