Your description of the problem is a bit broad, Dick. Could you answer a few questions to help pin down the problem?

- when you start Calibre, do you actually get the Calibre window showing, with the icon menu at the top (starting with a book icon that says "Add books")?
- When the Kindle is connected, is the 7th icon from the left an eBook Reader (white Kindle) called "Device"?

If both of the above are true, then the Kindle is attached and recognised by Calibre. Now all you have to do is click on "Add books", and select a book or books from your hard drive to add to the Calibre library. Once you have done this, you select the book from the library list, and click the "Send to device" icon.

Let us know a bit more about your situation, and I'm sure there are plenty of people out there happy to help.
