It started as a simple blister on a toe, there was never any pus. It rapidly spread to the front quarter of the foot enveloping all of the toes.
The infection was in, and under, the skin so it was hard for oral antibiotics to reach it.
I checked the shoes that I wear, all of them are older than 6 months, but could find no cause for the blister.
It's possible that after working on my feet for more than 40 years, that they just ain't what they used to be.
