Ouch. I feel for your son's colleagues. I had an old college colleague who was the principal investigator for a NASA satellite that launched and failed to reach orbit a decade ago. Many years of work leading up to it (and years more of work that was to come) all disappeared in a matter of seconds. Makes me wonder what he's up to now.
EDIT: Okay, it looks like he's no longer associated with the Jet Propulsion Lab and he's now teaching at a small college. It was perhaps a life-changing event for him.
