I do not think anybody outside of B&N have any updates on their store.
If the only thing holding your friends back is rooting, well, I would not worry about it. The process is painless and very easy and you can revert back to stock at any moment. The NC is a pretty decent tablet and a competitive price, and much more functional once you root it.
