I think you're conflating 'function' and 'specs'.

I would suggest that the majority of those who choose Apple products do so specifically because they care more about functionality (quality of OS, interface and build materials) than pure numbers.

To suggest most people choose them because they're buying into a 'lifestyle brand' is pretty patronising. Sure, there are some people who want that, and they're always good to make fun of.
