You need to clean the code from Word, there is no way around that unfortunately. It seems that some of the Word garbage is messing with you here. No way is filtered HTML from Word even close to acceptable. It still full of garbage.

But as far as cleaning things up, I find that if you convert the HTML from Word into ePub, then it will be easier to clean it up to be decent code.
