Raymond's quote is self-defeating. P and P is held in high regard mainly by people who are Anglo-American centric. P and P has very little historical insight, and portrays near nobility as the suffering without even glancing at the servants who whose income was made by serving egotistical upper middle class people. The language and characters are fascinating, while the plot resembles that of a romantic movie, a chick flick.
P and P doesn't come within 50 spots of masterpieces like Crime and Punishment, or Brothers Karamazov
