AFAIR, it's exported in the appropriate place per the USB protocol (iSerial field in the device descriptor). I have zero experience with Windows/OS X's USB stack, so I can't tell you how to find it on these OS, but under Linux, it's a piece of cake (lsusb -v among other things).
