The (proprietary) iPod dock connector means that I can take any iPod built since 2003, or any iPhone, and plug it into my home or car stereo, and be simultaneously charging and enjoying my personal music instantly with line-level output (no messing with headphone volume or tolerating the extra distortion associated therewith). You just couldn't get that functionality through a standard micro USB cord. You have your definition of convenience, and I have mine.
