I recently started paying attention to other tables when we go out to eat -- now that my youngest is 2 years old and demands slightly less of my attention -- and I am amazed at the number of kids that are playing with their Nintendo DS Lite/DSi/DSi XL game consoles! I suddenly realize why my 7 year old keeps asking to take his in, even though I have never let him play with it at the table.

I think my husband would like to use his smartphone at the table -- and sometimes does, at home, when four of the five of us are done eating -- but he keeps it put away because he knows it annoys me. Sometimes, if it is just the two of us, we'll both have our phones out in a restaurant, but we're always doing something together, not separately. (Looking up movie reviews or times or calling up our email for an event schedule to share, for example.) We turn our phones off when we're at a movie.

I have never had a conversation with someone that I couldn't stop with a quick, "I'm in line and it's my turn at the register. I'll call you back in a few minutes." So, I guess I really don't understand why people feel like they have to be and stay on the phone and it does annoy me. I can't imagine what it is like to be a cashier and have to deal with it constantly!

It boggles my mind that people think it is okay to multitask electronic devices when dealing with people that are right in front of them!
