Another positive indication that you ARE definitely charging the battery is that, if the reader is turned on, you will see the battery symbol go solid with a little triangular arrow head pointing at it to indicate that charge current is flowing into the battery.
If you don't see this and you don't have a red light on top, then maybe there is a charging issue, and if you wait a short time the reader will probably pop up a message and complain that it can't find a charger.
The first charger I tried for my PRS-650 was an old apple compatible USB and it did not work.
Whenever I connected the apple charger, the 650 would pop up a message saying specifically that it was NOT CHARGING.
So if your PRS-x50 doesn't like the charger it should tell you.
If the reader doesn't complain, the red light should go on and the battery Icon should show that it is charging, until charging is complete.
Then, when charging is complete, the red LED goes out and the battery icon will show a full charge.
