With the right formatting, a 160x160 pixel screen was very usable for ebooks. The ebook software for the Palm (the Palm Reader) was good and Palm made software available that made it easy to make ebooks for the Palm Reader.

That's what I liked about my Palm Vx when reading ebooks: the screen was viewable without a backlight, and when you did turn on the backlight it just lit the non-background items on the screen (such as lighting the letters on screen rather than the background). This significantly reduced the amount of glare from the backlight and allowed me to read for long periods of time without discomfort.
