My parents live right next to the border. They go shopping in Hulst. One time I found a dictionary Dutch - Flemish. Subtitle: van ambetanterik tot zwanzen. I thought that was really funny. Those are words I use often, but I never thought about the fact that the Dutch don't understand those words.

(A couple of weeks ago, a Dutch friend told me the Flemish accent is really charming. I'm guessing he never heard anyone from the West of Flanders talking ).
Yes, our Dutch sounds so much harder and impolite in my ears than Flemish. Flemish really has a more softer and lovelier sound to the ear.
