Looking at the last post i may be way out of date but just came across this thread.
2 great books would be
A tree grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
about a family growing up in this period.
or a more recent book set in that period and an off the radar read would be
The adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
both great books, but very different styles
enjoy.
