@name: i don't want to spoil the ending, but the US did strike a deal with the japanese scientists; they wanted the medical information in exchange for keeping them from being prosecuted. it undoubtedly helped medicine advance, as they shot the patients with different kinds of viruses and then tried to treat them. i believe russia also played a part but i forgot; i read it a long time ago for my japanese history class.
