Maybe pick up a $99 Nook Classic refurb? You still get finger swipe for page turning and a decent e-ink screen. Battery life won't be great, but better than NOOKcolor. And maybe you'll feel better spending less for a more limited device. You'll also still be able to get library books, so not as limited as Kindle, in some respects.
