I equate this to the growing pains the music industry went through. Sadly, the book industry didn't take heed of the lessons and is making the mistakes all over again.
The big takeaway is price. If you price things low enough, people will buy instead of pirate. Ebooks should not be as expensive as it is compared to printed books. They've come down in price but it was laughable when ebooks were the same price as printed books. There's no cost to manufacturer, warehouse, distribute or dealer profit. Thus the price should only be the publisher profits, author profits and a very very small fee for marketing and the cost to run the websites.
