I used the modified bin file without removing the old Duokan. I then did a restart, pressing Q - and I got an error message about a failed update and had to press R. I then restarted again from the Kindle menu and then persistently pressed the Q and Duokan started - looking into the settings, the update worked after all, it shows the current version number. I am sure it updated because some of my fonts are no longer available.
