My issue, be it 'indies' or otherwise, is not the price itself as a dollar amount, but rather the price as it is relative to other options which may be available to me. This is why the 'agency' pricing has been an issue---because paper copies CAN be discounted, so I frequently encounter situations where an ebook version costs more than the lowest-priced paper option, so I feel like I am being punished for being an ebook fan and I feel like the publishers are not taking my business seriously. It's not that I can't afford $6 or $8 or whatever it is. It's that I am offended I am being asked to pay MORE money for something that has less cost to produce, which can't be lent or re-sold, which can be removed from my bookshelf at the publisher's whim etc.

Similarly, an indie who priced their book at $9 would not get my business because I know I can get a professionally edited book by a name author for that price so why would I take my chances on a possibly not very well edited book by someone I have never heard of for that same amount? It's not that I can't afford $9. It's that it's (to me) an unreasonable price for what I'm getting in that particular situation.
