I would agree with you about making up the number except they don't ask for your name, and even if they do, would I want to give it to them. I protect my Passport number like my Social Insurance Number, or Social Security Number, they are numbers that you should be very careful who you reveal them to.

If you are worried then I would suggest that you just give them your real passport number, that way they could find you, I suppose :P
