I cannot comment on other houses, but ours is a granite built house in the 1890's.
Certainly in winter it is cold enough in the kitchen (ex cooking) to leave milk out for longer than a day. Even in summer months it is difficult to get any real warmth into the room - so yes, I think it's a plausible scene.
