OK Stitchawl. You should go for it. Ostensibly I guess the first US law was for taxation. And they used the fact that the mexicans etc were using to get high as a little bit more push. But I think the real reason was..

But I think the real reason was.. Spoiler: BUSINESS!.... Without which there would be no push to make any laws. Difficult to say whether it was to limit the competition with the newly invented NYLON, (given that the first law about marijuana in the US was a directive to GROW it for fibre), or the competition with the newspaper manufacturers. either way they would have had plenty of lobby power in 1937.
