I hate them too. We always get the ones trying to get us to switch are gas or electricity provider. 9 times out of 10 I end up pulling out my bill and showing them that we're already getting a better rate than they are offering.
The best was the cute little blond girl (maybe 20 or so) who was selling some sort of children's book subscription or something like that. She showed up at the door, in the middle of summer, wearing bikers shorts, a very skimpy top that had buttons that had been opened up about half way to her belly button, and had her hair all let down over her shoulder. My wife answered and about a minute into the conversation when she realized my wife was about to close the door she said "Maybe I could talk to your husband?".
My wife let me talk for a minute or two then told me we had to go
