So basically this move could be interpreted as an attempt of apple to remove the intermediaries. In a similar way (and with similar contracts) as Amazon tries to get authors to 'publish' directly with them.

So in Apples rush to make it 'easier for the consumer' to buy books it is pushing out one App (the 'bookshop') so it can replace it with many Apps (one for each publisher). Yes I really, really see how it is doing this for the consumer.
I don't know about you, but I have no idea who publishes what author.
