I had the same problem... turns out I just wasn't reading the right type of fantasy. I consider myself a fantasy fan now, but I've also never been able to get into LOTR (I vaguely remember not hating The Hobbit) and hate pretty much anything I've ever tried by Terry Brooks. I really enjoyed HP, but I like YA books and can't get into audiobooks, so we differ there.

I really really highly recommend trying out the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson (first book: The Last Empire). And as much as some people love to hate on Robert Jordan, I LOVE the first Wheel of Time book (The Eye of the World). I'm still reading the series, and can't say I recommend the entire series, but the first one was incredible.
