There is an Australian science fiction book written in the 1930s which is online at Gutenberg Australia - http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0604821.txt - It's a few years since I've read it, but I always remember it as being so strange.

It involves an ordinary guy who is digging a well for a tank or something and he unearths an advanced civilisation - thousands of years old under the Earth. There is a woman who he can speak to somehow. Perhaps he wakes her out of some sort of sleep. I can't remember, but the whole thing is uncanny.
