How about this: Even if they offered the same deals, the in-app system can't handle more than 3,000 items. Amazon sell over 800k titles. How exactly do you think this will work?

If I were B&N or Amazon, I would create an in-app purchasing doohickey that was difficult to use and had only the 3,000 top-selling books and involve an in-app convenience surcharge. But I'd still offer the full catalog easy to use on my in-device apps and on the web, at the normal or discounted prices.
Then I'd watch Apple have a fit and they'd probably dump me anyway. But it would make me feel good.
