To your Clarke list I would also add his novel The City And The Stars and two of his best short stories ever The Star And Rescue Party.

Also do not overlook Andre Norton. Her Ad Astra, Time Trader, and Forerunner series are all good.

And you might want to look at Olaf Stapledon as well.
