Yes, it's a huge amount to charge isn't it? I am going to go and see the bank about it as I think it is terrible.
It's a good idea buying a gift card, I had thought of doing it but hadn't gotten around to it yet. I think Kobo is pretty safe.

Borders isn't actually refusing to honour gift cards, they are just requiring you to spend an equal amount. You still get the full value of the card.
